The vision for a Métis-led urban-Indigenous focused primary care initiative began in 2024, to improve access to healthcare for all people and create British Columbia’s first Métis-run primary care site. In partnership with the Alberni-Clayoquot Métis Society (ACMS), this grassroots initiative has grown through the support of Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC), Métis university students, community members, and the local primary care network (PCN).
Mamawii Indigenous Health and Care Society was officially launched in February 2026 and is proud to be the host agency for Mamawii Health Centre. We are currently in the community engagement phase. Working closely with community members, we will create services that reflect local needs. As we continue to grow, our next steps include recruitment and hiring of healthcare personnel as we prepare for our planned opening in Fall 2026.
Mamawii is a Michif word meaning "together" or "all together." The name reflects our belief that healthier communities are built through connection, collaboration, and shared responsibility. By bringing together healthcare providers, community partners, and the people we serve, Mamawii aims to create a welcoming space where everyone can feel supported, respected, and empowered.
Mamawii Indigenous Health and Care Society is working to improve access to culturally safe, community-centered health and wellness supports in Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley. Through collaboration, community engagement, and Indigenous-led approaches, we aim to address local health needs while fostering connection, belonging, and wellbeing.
Our goal is to create a welcoming space where individuals and families can access care, resources, and support that reflect the community's strengths and values.
